Don’t Miss the PLUS 2019 Healthcare & Medical PL Symposium: March 12-13 in Chicago

February 18, 2019 by matray

The Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) is once again hosting its annual Healthcare & Medical PL Symposium at Chicago’s Loews Hotel on March 12-13, 2019. The Symposium brings together speakers, sponsors and a vast network of professionals focused on big topics within the MPL market.

“The healthcare market is quickly evolving and shifting, and we work hard to consider the most up-to-date content and speakers for the Symposium each year. It will be two days packed full of helpful information,” said Robbie Thompson, PLUS executive director. “The PLUS Healthcare and Medical PL Symposium gives our members and attendees not only an opportunity to get together with their colleagues in one place, but to also meet many more.”

Each year, the PLUS Symposium is both well-attended and positively reviewed. Many of the sessions include educational components and qualify for CE/CLE credits; other sessions feature non-industry thought-leaders. This year’s keynote presenter is Kathleen Sebelius, former U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services. She is one of America's foremost experts on national and global health issues, human services and executive leadership. As CEO of Sebelius Resources LLC, former Secretary Sebelius provides strategic advice to companies, investors and non-profit organizations. From April 2009 through June 2014, Sebelius served in President Barack Obama's Cabinet as the 21st Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services.

Some of the other presentations include:

  • An MPL Market Update: The two-part panel will cover a MPL market update and industry perspective from reinsurance professionals.  The first part will cover industry financial results and analysis for each major MPL business segment presented by Conning.  Part two will be a discussion by reinsurance professional of challenges, opportunities and emerging issues in this complex space.

  • Private Equity in the Healthcare Industry: PE firms have taken an increasingly large role in healthcare, investing in the full range of companies: insurers, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical-technology firms and many kinds of service providers. Historically, success has come from making “smart bets” on companies well positioned to capitalize on an industry trend or shift.

  • Disaster Preparedness, Insights for Healthcare Facilities: As healthcare facilities face traumatic events such as violence in the workplace, mass shootings and natural disasters, the panel will share insights concerning issues of liability, coverage, risk analysis and crisis management.

  • National Perspectives - Telehealth Trends & Policy: Telemedicine and its implications — from HIPPA regulation and what an underwriter should consider when they underwrite this risk to entities developing algorithms to diagnose patients, who is monitoring and catching “red flags” and CMS proposals for telehealth benefits for Medicare Advantage Plans — what does this mean?

  • Sexual Abuse in the Healthcare Environment: Doctors and other medical professionals are put in a unique situation of trust with their patients. Generally, when your doctor tells you to do something, you trust that he has your wellbeing at heart. However, some professionals will use this trust to manipulate specific situations for their own sexual gratification. Insurers must assess the clues that are red flags for a bad risk.

  • Stay Ahead of the Curve - Claim Trends for Nurse Practitioners: A dialogue about medication management and non-compliant patients.

  • Data: When Will the Machines Take Over? The analysis of that data into a single, actionable patient record, and the actions through which care providers can improve both clinical outcomes for providers and financial outcomes for Med Mal insurers.
